Local Members Gather Community Feedback on National Disability Insurance Scheme Implementation

Nearly 100 people have taken part in local forums to identify the issues with the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Organisations who provide services as well as people with disabilities and their carers attended the NDIS community consultation forums in Springwood jointly hosted by Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, and State Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle.

Ms Doyle said the forums followed on from the work she began nearly 2 years ago as a newly elected MP.

“At the 2015 Disability Forum we heard a great deal about people’s aspirations for the NDIS. At that time it was clear that the NSW Government was withdrawing from service provision for people with disabilities, however, it remained to be seen what this would mean in practise.”

Ms Templeman said that the transition of people from old services was virtually complete, so that the majority of the responsibility now rests with the Federal Government.

“Since its inception by Bill Shorten as a Minister in the Gillard Government, there is a deep commitment on both sides of politics to the ideals of the NDIS, but there has also been a lot of talk both locally and on a Federal level about its current shortfalls,” Ms Templeman said.

“As local members, Trish and I wanted to consult directly with locals and hear what is and is not working,” said Ms Templeman.

“Delays around poorly thought-through plans, shocking delays for new wheelchairs and mind-boggling bureaucracy are still occurring,” she said.

“One of the issues that came up at the Forum relates to the way the State-run hospital and school systems intersect with the Federally-run NDIS. This is the sort of issue where both Susan and I need to work together to improve the system,” said Ms Doyle.

“It is two years since full implementation of the NDIS and the gaps in access are now evident. It is important that the State Government acknowledges the negative impacts of its withdrawal from service provision on the lives of people with disabilities and their families, and works with those affected to improve the system,” Ms Doyle said.

“The direct feedback we received is something really tangible that both Trish and I can continue to feed in to our respective levels of government to ensure that the voices and ideas of the Blue Mountains community is heard in Labor’s policy making processes,” said Ms Templeman.
