Local Flora and Fauna Celebrated in Design of New Amenities Block at Pioneer Park

As part of the planned upgrades at Pioneer Park Lithgow, Lithgow City Council is installing a new twin accessible toilet block with an exterior photographic wrap featuring a Regent Honeyeater and Large-Fruited Tea Tree.

Over recent years, Council has installed a number of automatic accessible toilets including at Blast Furnace, Endeavour Park and Cook Street Plaza. These state of the art self-cleaning toilets have been a big hit with the community and have lower maintenance and repair costs than traditional toilets. A key feature of the toilets is the ability to wrap them in photo film highlighting local history, places of interest and local flora and fauna.

The design of the new Pioneer Park toilet thematically connects to Ludwina Roebuck’s artwork, Bird Houses (2018), commissioned by Lithgow Tidy Towns, and promotes the natural beauty of our region. The Regent Honeyeater, one of the most important avian pollinators of native plant species, is found in the Capertee Valley and is the focus of a large conservation program led by Taronga Zoo and BirdLife Australia.

The Large-Fruited Tea Tree, officially adopted as the Lithgow’s town flower in 1998, is native to the high plateau around Clarence.

“I’m excited to see a new toilet going into the top of Main Street,” said Mayor Ray Thompson. “The design of the amenities block is an opportunity to create a vibrant space for the community and promote our unique assets to visitors. As well as adding colour to Pioneer Park, the design will raise awareness of this rare bird species.”

The new toilet will be available for use once further works are completed in Pioneer Park including an accessible pathway and landscaping.
