Blue Mountains visual artist Catherine O’Donnell will undertake a new project in 2018 thanks to funding announced by Member of the Legislative Council and Blue Mountains resident Shayne Mallard MP and Minister for the Arts Don Harwin.

Ms O’Donnell will receive a $1,250 NSW Artists’ Grant to present new work in an exhibition entitled ‘Urban Abstraction’ at May Space, Sydney. The exhibition will be based on local and international social housing, with O'Donnell engaging the expertise of master printmaker Wendy Murray to produce the printmaking component of the exhibition.

In the third of four rounds for 2018, $12,340 will be shared between 10 individuals across the State.

Mr Mallard said, “Regular investment in our local artists is vital in creating sustainable practice and it is fantastic that the NSW Government is recognising artists like Catherine through this fund. We are confident that this experience will help in developing her professional portfolio and profile as she continues to hone her practice.”

Minister Harwin praised the diversity of works that the funding will support across the State.

“This fund brings to life a range of artistic adventures that will take place across the State, country and internationally, showcasing the strength of NSW’s visual artists to a wide audience.

“From history and dance, to audio-visual and printmaking, our funded artists are set to combine an eclectic mix of themes to deliver their messages. I’m intrigued and excited to be supporting our artists in extending their reach, exposure and continuation of their creative development,” he said.

The NSW Artists’ Grant program is a Create NSW funding initiative administered by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA), the national peak body for the Australian visual and media arts, craft and design sector.

Individual recipients can apply for support of up to $1,250 and groups up to $2,500 per project, to cover costs associated with creating, presenting and promoting NSW visual artists and craft and design practitioners’ work.
