Local Artists Exhibit at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest
Visit Penrith Regional Gallery’s Winter Exhibition suite and engage in the work of local artists Vicky Browne, John South and women artists from Garage Graphix, or visit the main gallery for Black Mist Burnt Country.
Blue Mountains artist Vicky Browne’s Cosmic Noise is a sculptural installation accompanied by an orchestration of barely audible sound. Her work suggests an astronomical explosion, the big bang, that leads us to the celestial notion that life exists throughout the universe, held within space dust, meteoroids and far-flung planets.
Local Aboriginal artist John South’s video installation Possum-Skin Cloak is evocative of the transition between waking up, leaving the night dream and awakening to a sky world in the clouds. His work portrays the Aboriginal mythology of the entwined mother earth and father clouds to form the mist falling upon the protective possum skin cloaks.
Black Mist Burnt Country is an award-winning national touring exhibition featuring art from over 30 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists commemorating the British atomic tests at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands in the 1950s.
A variety of interactive elements will enable visitors to gain insight into the social, political and environmental impacts, while placing the Australian atomic tests in the context of the nuclear arms race and present-day realities.
It is surprising how few people are aware atomic bombs were exploded in Australia, and how little they know about the dislocation of Aboriginal people, the exposure of Australian servicemen and the contamination of the land. This exhibition offers some remarkable insights into a chapter of our history that has long-lasting consequences, while it poses some important questions in relation to contemporary nuclear issues.
- JD Mittmann, exhibition curator.
Garage Graphix was a community art, design and screen printing workshop, based in Mount Druitt from 1981 until 1998. Established by arts workers active in the women’s movement, Garage Graphix employed artists and cultural workers to develop, train and mentor local community, students and artists in the collaborative production of posters. As seen in this exhibition, posters articulated and promoted a range of concerns and issues including education, health, environment and pollution, Aboriginal rights, deaths in custody and women’s rights.
Featuring long term Garage Graphix arts workers Alice Hinton-Bateup, Maxine Conaty, Marla Guppy, Karen Vance and Lin Mountstephen, the exhibition offers audiences a chance to consider the important role these women played in demanding a better life, greater opportunities and in many cases equal rights.
