Lions Volunteers Spreading Christmas Spirit to Farmers in Drought
Volunteers from Oatley, Lugarno and Cronulla Lions Clubs in Sydney have been working hard for weeks, fundraising and collecting donations to help farmers in drought celebrate this Christmas.
16 of the volunteers will be loading up their trailers in Sydney tomorrow and travelling to Gollan near Dubbo bearing donations, food, clothes and Christmas presents for the children.
A Christmas party will be held on the property of fellow Lions, Anne Jones OAM and Peter Perry, on Saturday 14th December. 165 adults and over 130 children will enjoy a free BBQ and will be provided with local food and fuel vouchers, together with free non-perishable food and most importantly free Christmas presents for the children.
“It’s the season of giving and unfortunately, many farmers are struggling to buy food and water let alone gifts for their children and family this year,” says Wayne Smith, Oatley Lions Club.
"Oatley, Lugarno and Cronulla Lions Clubs set ourselves a mission of doing what we can to provide a ray of hope and happiness to some of these farmers and their families. We thank everyone in our communities who have shown support through donating toys, clothes and funds. The funds have helped us purchase local food and fuel vouchers for the farmers to use in these communities, as well as non-perishable food and some special gifts for the children,” adds Wayne Smith, Oatley Lions Club.
Anne Jones OAM, past Mayor of Wellington Council and award-winning Lions volunteer thanked the Sydney Lions Clubs for their support.
“We are very excited to be hosting a Christmas party for the farmers this weekend and are very thankful for the support of our Lions Clubs in the city who are going above and beyond to help support our district through this difficult time. We have over 165 farmers and 130 children attending the party on Saturday who I’m sure will all be very grateful for the support and of course the much-needed Christmas cheer,” says Anne Jones OAM.
Since 2018, Anne and Geurie Lions Club’s other 11 members have been driving a drought relief project for their district. District 201N4 is the largest Lions district in NSW, stretching from Winmalee in the Blue Mountains in the east to Bourke in the West and from Bourke to Tumbarumba in the South.
“As the drought situation became more serious last year, Lions clubs, corporates and individuals across the country generously started donating to our district through the Australian Lions Foundation National Appeal, their local Lions clubs or Lions Clubs in affected areas,” says Anne Jones OAM.
“We have now received $2,068,081 worth of donations and are proud to confirm we have already distributed $1,868,984 of this to farmers in our local area through supplying hay and a range of much needed items and goods. Added to this is the NSW Government freight subsidy of $944,295 making the total project to date $3,012,376. We will continue to distribute in coming months, but the situation here is dire and our farmers are in desperate need of more support,” says Anne Jones OAM.
