Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne welcomed the announcement of more than $200,000 funding for local sporting infrastructure in the Blue Mountains as part of the second $30 million round of the Liberal and Nationals Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program.

The announcements were made last week for a new awning and scoreboard at Lapstone with representatives of Blue Mountains Rugby Club and support for a new facilities building at Pitt Park in Wentworth Falls with representatives from Wentworth Falls Football Club and Blue Mountains City Council.

“The Liberal and Nationals Government understands that our success and prowess as a sporting nation begins with grassroots sports, which is why we have focused our investment on local grassroots sporting facilities such as the awning and scoreboard at Lapstone and the new facility building in Wentworth Falls,” Minister McKenzie said.

“As outlined in the National Sports Plan, Sport 2030, grassroots sports help drive increased participation and promote social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport – a key priority for our government.'

Senator Payne said sport played an important role across the Blue Mountains and the benefits of the Liberal and Nationals Government investment in the facilities will be felt right across the community.

“I am pleased to be part of the Liberal National Government that is delivering for grassroots sports. Whether player, coach, volunteer or spectator, the upgrades today will enhance the experience of all users of these facilities,” said Senator Payne.

The upgrade of the new facilities building in Pitt Park has been a long awaited project.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Van der Kley said, “I would like to thank the Federal Government for this grant for a new facilities building at Wentworth Falls and look forward to working with the Wentworth Falls Football Club for a great outcome.”

President of the Wentworth Falls Football Club, Bill Bouzianis said, “This project addresses a long standing, and well known need within the Blue Mountains Sporting Community. Members of the Wentworth Falls Football Club have been raising funds for a new building for over 20 years, as the current building that serves the football facilities and club at Pitt Park is in poor condition.

“This project will enable the club to provide its members with a safe and welcoming facility with adequate storage, toilet and change facilities at the football fields. The new facility will enable the football club and other users to engage with participants regardless of weather conditions. The club will become a place that can proudly attract community involvement, providing them with the opportunity to meet and work with other community groups in a safe and functional environment,” Bill Bouzianis concluded.

The Blue Mountains Rugby Club has been eager to obtain an awning and scoreboard for some time to improve sport participation regardless of weather conditions.

President of the Blue Mountains District Rugby Club, George Ftynogiannis said, “These improved facilities will attract more community support and participation.

“The Federal Government’s financial support in the achievement of both our awning and scoreboard will be a great benefit to the club. Our members and community are very grateful for the support,” said George Ftynogiannis.

“Sport 2030 recognises sport plays a significant role in Australia, from our biggest cities, to regional communities like ours here in the Blue Mountains,” concluded Senator Payne.

Blue Mountains City Council is a proponent for the new facilities building at Pitt Park.
