Labor Commits to Paid Domestic Violence Leave
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, who was at the annual White Ribbon ceremony in Parliament House for the announcement, said the paid leave was a vital step to help women leave violent relationships.
“We know that in a lot of cases a key reason women don't leave a violent relationship is because they're worried about how they will survive financially and how they’ll support their children. They’re worried about being able to keep a roof over their head.
“If a woman needs to take time off work to do things like go to court, receive medical treatment or help children move schools, she should be able to count on being able to go back to work and keep receiving that very important pay check.
In 2017 alone, domestic violence has taken the lives of 45 women. It is also the leading cause of death, disability and illness among women aged 15-44 years of age.
“Many good employers – large ones like IKEA and Qantas, and small businesses - are already providing leave to women facing domestic violence, but it’s not enough to leave it to the goodwill of an employer.
“I am proud to be a part of a party that is committed to ending violence against women, not only in what we say, but in what we do,” Ms Templeman said.
“Recognition of the problem is no longer enough, and women should no longer be grateful for Governments only admitting that the problem exists.
“Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals need to support Labor’s commitment to domestic and family violence leave if they are serious about reducing violence against women and children.”
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the 10 days paid domestic and family violence leave will be legislated in the National Employment Standards.
