Is There Anybody Out There? The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at The Joan
Our last Sci-fi LAB @ the Joan explores the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
This Friday we will be screening Robert Wise’s socially-minded 1951 sci-fi cult classic The Day the Earth Stood Still to challenge our beliefs in extraterrestrial intelligence, and the possible consequences affecting the stability of life on Earth if contact is made. Wise’s black and white cult classic imparts morals of peace, tolerance and understanding. An alien (Klaatu) with his powerful, protective robot (Gort) land their flying saucer on Earth at the end of World War II. As keepers of peace in the universe, they bring an important message to the planet. All nations must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.
After the screening Dr Ain de Horta, Astronomer-in-Charge, Western Sydney University Observatory, will discuss the current search for evidence of other intelligent beings and signs of advanced life forms in the universe - and the dangers involved.
Performance-based artists Nicola Morton and Eugene Choi will present a collaborative visual sound and dance performance exploring the immensity of space. Sound artist Nicola will perform using a live theremin, used to score many films in the 1940s and 50s including The Day The Earth Stood Still. She is joined by dancer and performance artist Eugene, who will perform a newly choreographed movement piece alongside Nicola's composition.
“Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you” Klaatu
