Intergenerational Playgroup Uniting the Young and the Young at Heart

Lithgow City Council has joined forces with Portland Tabulam Health Centre and LINC’s Communities & Kids to deliver an innovative intergenerational playgroup.

Lithgow City Council, in conjunction with Portland Tabulam Health Centre and LINC’s Communities & Kids, is proud to announce the start of a joint intergenerational playgroup where the young and the young at heart join together for a morning of social interaction.

“The Intergenerational Playgroup is a wonderful opportunity for parents, carers, children and aged care residents to engage in early childhood activities, offer parents and carers a local peer support network, and provide residents with community interaction,” said Mayor of Lithgow City Council, Cr Stephen Lesslie.

Intergenerational playgroups improve outcomes and quality of life for older people and attending families. Benefits include increased joy and happiness, higher levels of self-esteem, greater community connections and a sense of belonging. The Intergenerational Playgroup Project was made possible by a $16,000 grant awarded to Council by Family and Community Services under the Liveable Communities Program which aims to capture the energy of Australian innovators and focus it on defining what it will mean to age well in the 21st century.

The Intergenerational Playgroup at the Portland Tabulam Health Centre is a pilot project, which will enable the project team to test their assumptions and create sustainable solutions for social connectedness and positive ageing. The fundamental goal of the Intergenerational Playgroup is to enhance social inclusion.

Lithgow City Council is dedicated to closing intergenerational gaps between younger and older members of the community. “We recognise the benefits of younger and older people participating in activities together. Connections are made and wellbeing is enhanced,” Cr Lesslie said.

Stage one of the Intergenerational Playgroup is scheduled to commence in October 2018. Families interested in participating in the pilot should contact Viktoria Gulabovski, Community Development Officer and project lead, on 6354 9999, or Lydia Commins, Manager of Communities & Kids at LINC on 6354 5906.
