How to Keep the Kids Entertained This Easter

Go on a Blue Mountains bush walk this Easter long weekend
The Easter long weekend is fast approaching, and while for some this may mean a much-needed and well-deserved holiday away, for many families in New South Wales, the fact that Easter does not align with the school holidays means a staycation is on the cards.

But just because you’re not leaving the comfort of your own neighbourhood, doesn’t mean you can’t make the break fun for both you and your kids. There are a number of activities that you can do to make the most of, potentially, the last weekend of warm weather till next summer.

Host a family movie night

Everyone loves going to the movies, but we all know how expensive it can be. By the time you’ve purchased tickets for the family as well as a few snacks and drinks, you’re looking at almost $100 for an afternoon outing. Instead, grab the microwave popcorn and your favourite family movies and settle in for a marathon. You can even serve up some Easter-themed treats and indulge in a few Easter movies such as Hop or Rise of the Guardians.

Go for a bushwalk

It’s the perfect time of year to head outside, get some fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors. It’s not too hot and not too cold and magpie season is well and truly over. Most Aussies are lucky enough to be at least driving distance from a nice bush walk, so make the most of it. You might even come face to face with some wildlife! Make sure you stay sun safe, though, and pack yourself some snacks and water for little stops along the way.

Set up camp in your own backyard

If you can’t make it to your favourite camping spot this Easter long weekend, why not pitch a tent in your own backyard and let the kids camp out for a night? What child wouldn’t love waking up in the backyard to an Easter egg hunt! You can make it even more authentic by having a BBQ and setting up the camp chairs for an outdoor feast. You can then head inside for some peace and quiet while the kids stay up late making as much noise as they want. It’s a win-win.

Make the most of free events

There are plenty of free events all around New South Wales over the Easter long weekend and they’re perfect for a cheap outing with the family. Penrith Panthers is hosting its annual Easter Carnival on Sunday, with rides, food stalls and an Easter egg hunt. If you’re in the Blue Mountains, there’s a cheap Easter adventure on at Mount Tomah and it’s running all weekend long.

Or pop down to Sydney to check out the Sydney Family Show at Moore Park, which has free entry and a number of shows and animals to see.

Get cooking

Although letting your kids in the kitchen might seem like the last thing you want to do, cooking a few simple things together can be a great way to spend the weekend, not to mention the delicious treats you’ll be left with at the end of the day. Easter carrot cupcakes and homemade chocolates are a great alternative to store-bought Easter eggs and cakes. Not only are they cheaper but you can make them more personalised too!

Go on a picnic

We’re well into autumn, but most of New South Wales will be lucky enough to enjoy another warm weekend so make sure you get out there and enjoy it. Head to your closest beach, watering hole or park with a basket full of sandwiches and your homemade cakes. If you feel like going all out, get some picnic inspiration from Pinterest. Don’t forget the picnic blanket, some comfy pillows and a few activities to really make the most of the day.
