How I Saved the Western Black Rhino

In the history of the earth there have been five mass extinction events, the most recent and famous being a comet that wiped out the dinosaurs. According to many, we might well be in the middle of the sixth.

This is not the stuff of science fiction. Current extinction rates are thousands of times higher than normal and for the first time this isn’t being driven by comets, volcanoes or ice ages. It’s being caused by us.

As a boy Nathan Harrison dreamed of going to Africa to help save the western black rhino. Poaching, loss of habitat and an under-resourced conservation plan brought the western black rhino to the edge of extinction, but not before Nathan had the chance to live his dream: travelling to Cameroon to be involved in the insurmountable challenge to preserve one of the final 10 western black rhinos.

How I Saved the Western Black Rhino is the uplifting story of Nathan’s travel adventure told along-side the crisis of the sixth extinction and what we stand to lose. With limited resources, how do we make the impossible decisions of what to save and what to let go? This is a wake-up call that, as a species, we have a responsibility to act now.  

With the excitement of Jurassic Park, the wonder of David Attenborough’s Planet Earth and the adventurous spirit of Douglas Adams and Stephen Fry’s Last Chance to See, this is a show for anyone curious about what we can do before it’s too late.

Head to The Joan and enjoy the Q Theatre’s performance of two short works; How I Saved The Western Black Rhino - Nathan Harrison, and Everything You Ever Wanted – Rachel Roberts. Two great new shows for the price of one, from Thursday 15 March until Saturday 24 March.
