Katoomba residents are encouraged to attend a workshop aimed at reducing horse-related injuries and fatalities among novice and beginner riders.

Member of the Legislative Council and Blue Mountains resident Shayne Mallard MP said a new Code of Practice (CoP) rolled out by SafeWork NSW assists employers and workers in the horse industry to reduce injuries in the workplace.

Mr Mallard said the training is aimed at helping everyone in the industry to improve safety for novice and beginner riders. The greater Blue Mountains is home to many horse owners and people who work with horses in the community.

“Of the 133 horse-related fatalities that occurred Australia-wide between 2000 and 2014, 18 per cent involved people under the age of 20,” Mr Mallard said.

“This workshop will discuss the code of practice, and examine different safety systems for different disciplines within the horse industry.

“There will be training sessions to outline the responsibilities of businesses and individuals when new or inexperienced riders or handlers interact with horses in the workplace, and discussions on how to manage the risks associated with new riders at work.

“I want everyone who works with horses in our community to undertake this training so they can be as safe as possible at work,” Mr Mallard said.
