A design for the new inclusive adventure play space at Springwood’s Buttenshaw Park is now available for review, following extensive community consultation.

The design features a 25 metre flying fox, a giant group swing and two person spinner. Other stand out pieces are a one-of-a-kind climbing structure and a 25 metre pump track for scooting, biking and skating.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said the proposed design was informed by almost 500 responses to the Funbobulator – an online tool where the community outlined what they wanted to see at the park. A series of youth workshops were also held to inform the concept.

“Buttenshaw Park will become an exciting new recreation space for older children and teenagers of the Blue Mountains. We encourage residents to look at the concept design and let us know what they think,” Mayor Greenhill said.

“Other proposed features of the upgrade include a new accessible footpath that links the space to the Springwood Aquatic & Fitness Centre, sandstone seating, table tennis, a lookout deck and bouldering wall.

“Don’t miss the chance to provide feedback on this park concept before the design is finalised.”

Several pieces of equipment in the proposed design, such as the basket/group swing and flying fox, will cater for those with additional needs.

Council has also started developing a Plan of Management and Masterplan for Buttenshaw Park. These plans will help inform future projects at the site.

The plan provides approaches for recreation zoning, the Great Western Highway interface and vehicle rest area, the Sanda Japan Friendship Gardens, the Churchill Place Entry, water sensitive design, furniture, wayfinding and lighting.

A survey is also currently available so the Blue Mountains community can provide feedback on the preliminary Masterplan.

“Both the play space design and preliminary Masterplan respect key community values for the park including consideration for the ecological value of Birdwood Gully and the retention of wide open lawns for passive recreation activities,” Mayor Greenhill said.

Buttenshaw Park is one of four District Parks – large, high quality parks that cater to the needs of the broader Blue Mountains community – that are receiving upgrades thanks to the Western Sydney City Deal Liveability Program.

Surveys for both the park concept design, and preliminary Masterplan, for Buttenshaw Park are open until 9 August 2020. Go to the your say Buttenshaw Park page for more information.

More information is available on the plans for Glenbrook District Park, Wentworth Falls Lake District Park and Blackheath Soldiers Memorial Park at Your Say.
