Great Concerts from the Friends of the Mechanics Institute, Lawson
Tickets are available now for the return of international classical guitar trio Ralph Towner, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Slava Grigoryan on 16 February, 2019, after a huge audience was dazzled by their musicianship at the hall in 2014. Tickets: $80.
But the Friends’ concert season starts much sooner: this Saturday, 1 December 2018, they will host eight hours of music by amazingly diverse Blue Mountains musicians.
Doors will open at 2.30pm for the concert featuring blues band the Quagmires; singer, guitarist and drummer Willem Roorda; blues harmonica player Rob Thompson with guitarist Ian Host; Jeff Wilson, James Roy and Matt Skeletor; the Scarab Beatles; Jim Jarvis and friends; Soular Spill; Phil Voysey; Matt Tonks; and dance-rock band Hail Clive.
Money raised will help the Friends put on more concerts in future. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for pensioners and $10 for teenagers aged 15-18. Children are admitted free.
Then, on Wednesday, 19 December 2018, cellist and songwriter Monique Clare and percussionist Caleb Colledge will perform at the Mechanics Institute. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets cost $20.
Ms Clare has played her music around the world – including teaching cello in Afghanistan -- and has performed at several folk festivals around Australia, including the Blue Mountains Music Festival. ABC radio presenter Wendy Harmer has said her music is “absolutely delicious”.
John Sheehy, the president of the Friends’ new committee, said: “Have a rest from the deluge of social media. Immerse yourself in the moment of the live music played in your local public hall as other generations have done since 1903.”
The Friends are looking for new members and volunteers to help backstage, cook and serve food at events, help as parking attendants, photograph events, contribute to their website and Facebook page, and promote events.
“Volunteers are the gel of our social wellbeing,” Mr Sheehy said. “We encourage you to join us." To book tickets, make a payment to the Bendigo Bank account of the Friends of the Mechanics Institute Lawson Inc., BSB 633000, account number 151946779, and confirm by email to. Or post a cheque to The Treasurer, FOTMIL, PO Box 130, Lawson 2783. Tickets will be available at the door if they are not sold out.
