Government Says Upper Mountains Stuck With Copper

Source: Susan Templeman MP, Member For Macquarie
Archived 13 Nov 2017 - Posted: 14 Sep 2017
Residents of the upper mountains are set to be stuck with second-rate NBN for a long time with NBN confirming there is no plan to upgrade the copper Fibre to the Node.

“This leaves Lawson to Mt Victoria stuck on this increasingly outmoded FTTN technology for the foreseeable future,” Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman said.

The confirmation came in questions to the Department of Communications during hearings of the Joint Standing Committee on the National Broadband Network, where the Department said: "as NBN has previously outlined, there is no current plan to upgrade specific sections of the network."

“This is bad news for regions like ours, which will be left stranded on a second rate, copper NBN indefinitely – with no upgrade path planned,” Ms Templeman said.

"At the same hearing, NBN CEO Mr Morrow told the NBN Committee that: "Those that are closer to the node will have 100 Mbps and those that are far from the node will have 25 Mbps" and "shorter copper distance [which] raises your speed."

“These statements confirm Labor’s concerns about the copper NBN and the disappointing and frustrating experience many Upper Mountains consumers have had.

“This is a dud deal that has been forced on us by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his Liberal Party and National Party MPs and Senators.

“Turnbull’s NBN has cost us billions in switching to outmoded copper technology and we are right to be angry about this.”
