Lithgow City Council’s Future Finders program is now offering select high school students the opportunity to be a part of an ‘Education Taster’ to get a taste for campus life in Lithgow and gain a clearer understanding of the local course offerings.

“It is important for our high school students to be exposed to the benefits of tertiary learning and the local opportunities available to them,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Cr Stephen Lesslie.

The students taking part in the Education Tasters have been selected from Lithgow High School, La Salle Academy and Portland Central School. They will be bussed from their schools to the three tertiary education centres in town including, Lithgow Tafe, WSU and Notre Dame University, and will take part in tours, information sessions and practicals.

“We look forward to rolling out the Education Tasters this July and hope students have a great time on each of the campuses,” continued the Mayor.

Lithgow City Council’s Future Finders program has been running since the beginning of the year and has achieved many positive outcomes. The program has delivered skills and knowledge in business, entrepreneurship and leadership.

“To date we have run seven workshops to a hundred and five young people through the Future Finders program. Participants have acquired skills and knowledge in areas of business development, teamwork and marketing,” concluded the Mayor.

The Future Finders program has equipped students with the foundations to seek employment. Participants have reported a sense of value in the workshops, expressing that they think the skills learnt will help them to get a job, whilst others have reported that they now have increased confidence to put in a resume to employers as they have had some employment training and a certificate that highlights their learning.

Corrina Piggott, one of the Future Finders participants of ‘Success Through Customer Service’ said, “the workshop gave me the skills and confidence to put my resume in with Woolworths. I’m hoping to bulk up my resume more by participating in future workshops and events offered through the Future Finders program”.

Participants have also heard from small business owners and freelancers who have inspired them to think differently about employment and the opportunities that may be present in the future. They have been encouraged to be innovative, think about all sorts of education and training that may help them to build skills from YouTube tutorials, to TAFE and university. All have been highlighted as options to build skills, knowledge and networking.

The Future Finders program is now at the half way mark. The second half of the program aims to deliver more opportunities for the young people of Lithgow, including employment tasters, social enterprise workshops, and youth leadership forums, so watch this space!
