Floodplain Management Grant for Blue Mountains Council
Mr Mallard said the grant under the 2018-19 Floodplain Management Program will help Council better understand the flood levels, risk and exposure. The program funds important projects that assess risk and help reduce flood impacts across NSW.
The successful grant was in relation to overland flow path improvements in Luchetti Avenue Hazelbrook. The overland flow from Luchetti Avenue presents a high hazard, with regard to depth and velocity of flood waters, for a number of properties.
To protect these properties and ensure safe way out from Luchetti Avenue, Scullin Court and Lyons Place, this project will redirect the overland flow path to the natural creek line and the kerb height in front of flood-affected houses will be raised.
“The funding is a long-term investment to support Councils, and other government bodies who have the primary role of managing flood risk in their communities,” Mr Mallard said.
“The grants assist with flood studies, flood risk management studies and plans and the implementation of works to reduce flood risk.
“They can also support works such as flood levees, flood gates, warning systems and house raising and purchase in high risk areas."
Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton said the NSW Government Floodplain Management Program, administered by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage had funded 51 projects totalling $7.08 million.
“This grant to Blue Mountains Council is one of a further nine grants totaling $979,000.
“The Floodplain Management grant program supports the implementation of the NSW Flood Prone Land Policy which aims to reduce the impacts of flooding and flood liability on communities,” Minister Upton said.
