As part of the upgrade, the tennis court will be transformed into a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), providing a flexible space for various sports, including tennis, basketball, netball, pickleball and more. The plans also include accessibility upgrades, ensuring that the park is welcoming to all members of the community.

Key features of the court upgrade include: a new accessible path connecting the court, playground, and surrounding areas; upgraded court surface; and a new basketball hoop and netball ring.

The project will also see improved drainage and structural updates to retaining walls; a seating wall and new paved area with picnic benches; new tree planting, with the existing cedar tree retained; and connections to the car park path for better accessibility.

Council has worked closely with the community to gather input for the project, with the first phase of consultation completed earlier this year.

“We’ve seen overwhelming enthusiasm for this project, with community members really embracing the idea of an upgraded court and playspace,” said Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill.

“This upgrade will make Memorial Park an even better place for people to come together, whether for sport, recreation, or simply to enjoy the outdoors.

“We’re committed to listening to the community and ensuring the final designs reflect what our residents want.”

While the focus is currently on the tennis court, the playspace upgrade is also underway and Council expects to present these designs to the community early in 2025. The playspace redesign will depend on budget and designs are scheduled to be released to the community in early 2025.

Expected features in the playspace include: a new slide and swing set, including a nest swing and baby swing; climbing and balancing course; sensory play and nature play features; play elements inspired by native animal themes; and wheelchair access to key play features and seating.

The community's input is crucial to shaping the final designs and ensuring the park meets the needs of all users.

“We are grateful for the ongoing engagement from the Mount Victoria community,” Cr Greenhill added. “This consultation will allow us to fine-tune our plans for the court to ensure that the park is a vibrant, inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.”

Consultation is open from 18 November to 18 December 2024.
