When the temperature drops and the air takes on that crisp, woodsmoke scent, something magical stirs in the Blue Mountains. Welcome to Yulefest – our region’s beloved winter celebration that lights up the season with old-world charm and down-to-earth joy.

Inspired by Christmas traditions of the northern hemisphere, Yulefest began right here in the Mountains in the late 1970s, when a visiting Irish tourist remarked on the wintry weather and wished for a festive Christmas dinner by the fire. The idea caught on, and what began as a quiet winter’s meal has grown into a region-wide tradition.

Now, each year from June through August, towns across the Mountains come alive with crackling fireplaces, hearty roasts, mulled wine, and the glimmer of fairy lights. Local venues – from grand heritage hotels to cosy guesthouses – offer Yuletide feasts, live music, and classic winter cheer.

But Yulefest is more than just nostalgia. It’s a chance to slow down and reconnect. To savour a season where mist rolls over valleys and every bite tastes better when you’ve earned it with a brisk walk or a bracing lookout view.

Things to do this Yulefest:

  • Tuck into a traditional Christmas dinner at one of our heritage hotels

  • Sip mulled wine in front of a roaring fire

  • Explore winter markets and pick up handmade gifts

  • Take a frosty morning bushwalk and see the escarpments in a whole new light

  • Stay overnight in a charming B&B and wake up to mountain mist

Whether you're here for the food, the atmosphere, or just to feel the season more deeply, Yulefest invites you to wrap yourself in the kind of winter magic that only the Blue Mountains can offer.

Ready to experience the wonder? Plan your Yulefest escape today – and discover winter, the Blue Mountains way.
