Family Day Care Celebrates Children’s Week with Sensory Play
The event, hosted by Blue Mountains Family Day Care, focused on sensory play.
Blue Mountains Family Day Care Service Coordinator Bev Foden said: “Each child’s sensory needs are unique. By offering a variety of sensory experiences, children have the freedom to investigate how the effect of different sensations make them feel.
“A positive sensory experience allows a child to feel safe within their environment, and teaches them how to self-regulate.”
In February 2017, Blue Mountains Family Day Care introduced the Therapeutic and Inclusive Play Spaces (TIPS) project to its service.
The TIPS project, funded by a Family Day Care Australia Excellence Fund grant, has enabled the service to work in partnership with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) providers. It helps support educators to develop therapeutic, innovative learning environments.
“The Children’s Week event in October allowed participants to experience first-hand how effective sensory play and inclusive play spaces are for children of all different levels and abilities,” Mrs Foden said.
“Glenbrook Park was the ideal play space for the sensory activities which included coloured rice play, water beads, scented playdough, musical instruments and of course some playground fun.”
The Benevolent Society also offered their time by providing face painting for the children.
Children’s Week is an annual National event, which celebrates The Rights of the Child.
