Experience the Magic of Live Performance with The Joan’s 2019 Kids & Families Program

The Ugliest Duckling
There’s something special about going to the theatre – the thrill of anticipation and delight unparalleled by any other kind of entertainment. Live performance brings us into the present, offering children (and their adults) a unique opportunity to engage in stories, music, and the enchanted world of the stage. The Joan would love to share this with you in 2019.

First up on April 9 & 10 is a brand-new stage adaptation of the magical Australian classic, Possum Magic. For over 30 years, Mem Fox’s Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people all over the country. Join Grandma Poss, baby Hush and the extraordinary creative team behind Monkey Baa as they bring to life the characters, journey and love of this best-selling Australian picture book.

Music, circus and fire becomes an instrument of the ensemble on Saturday June 1 in Concertos on Fire – a dynamic concert that explores new directions in classical presentation and contemporary music, modern circus and physical theatre. Watch flames erupt and music spring to life from all corners of the theatre in this new breath-taking concert, perfect for the whole family.

Next up is one of Shakespeare’s truly essential works; A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 14 & 15 June. Perhaps the best possible introduction young people can have to the theatre, and among the most powerful visions of growing up ever written. Like every fairy-story, A Midsummer Night’s Dream warns us that family, love and friendship are fragile – when parents are selfish, their children break the rules; when love rears its head, friendships are forgotten. And that’s just the mortal world.

Tchick, tchick! One by one the eggs break open. Except for one. This one is the biggest egg of all. The Ugliest Duckling, Q Theatre’s adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale is a celebration of difference. Exploring resilience, transformation and joy. Filled with spectacle and sound and boasting a lot of heart – this show is suitable for the whole family. 11, 12 & 13 July.

For one night only on Sat 20 July, Australia’s internationally acclaimed drumming ensemble Taikoz, will leave you breathless with The Beauty of 8 as both musicians and dancers explore the Japanese art of taiko drumming, combining movement, sound and rhythm into a performance that begs the question: Is it drumming? Is it dance? The rhythms are infectious, the melodies are soaring, and the costumes are lavish – perfect for ‘the bigger ones’ aged six and up.

Spot is one of the most loved dogs in the world, and he’s coming to Australia! On August 8, 9 & 10 Spot and his friends are off on a new adventure to visit Spot’s Dad on the farm and meet the farm animals. But when they arrive, all the animals are lost! Can Spot and his friends find them all? They might need a little help from their new friends in the audience… Join us in August as Eric Hill’s beloved puppy comes to life on stage with puppetry, songs, and puzzles for toddlers and their adults.

On 13 August, primary school-aged children will delight in The Young King, the story of a boy raised by goatherds when he is discovered to be the one and only heir to the Kingdom. Treasures and privileges are laid at his feet, but at what cost to others? The achingly beautiful and tender language of Oscar Wilde joins the intimate and magical world of performance, begging the question - what kind of King would you be? Journey in wonder to a land of challenging choices and rich rewards.

Based on the book by Jackie French and adapted for the stage, award-winning show Hitler’s Daughter will captivate older children and parents alike in the story of Heidi, the daughter of the most hated man in history. Showing Friday 30 August and told through the eyes of four Australian children Mark, Ben, Anna and Tracey, the play switches between 1940s Nazi Germany and contemporary Australia. Today, in an age of fake news and fact manipulation, extreme ideologies and rising nationalism, there has never been a more important and relevant time to present this work.

Year 10 Art and Design teacher Mrs Bathory is suspected of being the sadistic, undead serial-killer countess Elrezebet Bathory. It’s pretty obvious to her class of seven girls – the last remaining survivors of what the school is calling an outbreak of ‘head-lice’ but what the students of 10F know is really another murderous rampage in Bathory’s quest for eternal youth.  For teenagers, Bathory Begins is a chance to see the first production of a show that will be presented in high schools around the country for years to come. A co-production between Q Theatre at ATYP, showing from 11 – 21 September.

Ensemble Offspring, Sydney’s favourite musical mavericks, take toddlers and their families on a journey through the wonderment of chamber music in Bilby’s Bluegum Melodies. Showing on Wed 6 Nov, this show is the perfect introduction for your little ones to listen to the vast sonic world of piano, woodwinds and percussion, in an intimate and informal music show. Featuring old-fashioned colonial folk tunes, sounds of the Australian bush, instrumental demonstrations, hands-on percussion fun and music by much loved Australian composers.

The Kids and Families program in 2019 is also available for subscription. A family subscription (four tickets: two adults, two children) costs just $198 for three shows of your choosing*, for the whole year!
