Ever Wanted to Buy Artwork but Didn’t Know Where to Start?

We all collect something – be it stamps, shoes, cookbooks, cars or memories. Some of us even collect art. Have you ever wanted to buy or collect art but didn’t know where to start? Do you trust your judgement to collect art?

Do you sometimes wonder at what others call art? Do you have to break the bank to buy good art? What indeed drives the urge to collect, possess and hold?

Once the privilege and duty of the great and powerful; kings, queens, emperors and the Church, collecting art today is a lot different to what is has been in the past.  People collect or buy art for many reasons. Some for pure aesthetics or private pleasure, some view art as an investment, including self-managed superannuation funds. All very valid reasons to purchase!

In a celebration of the great tradition of patronage, and Penrith Regional Gallery’s Autumn exhibition, 5 x 5 The Artist and the Patron we invite you to a free Sunday afternoon public forum on art collecting. Join Edmund Capon AM OBE former Director of the Art Gallery NSW, and collector and artist panelists -  Dr Dick Quan, Lisa Paulsen and Julian Meagher -  who talk about their personal collections,  the driving forces and impulses of their collecting practices, and the artwork they love.

Hear the thoughts of collectors as they discuss their relationships with artists, gallerists, and their decisions to buy and display in their private homes. Hear about these wonderful, quirky, idiosyncratic collections, the affinity they share with particular artists, and hear about mistakes that are made along the journey of collecting.

If you are keen to start your own collection; make a start by listening to the experts. Take art consultant Amanda Love’s advice and through time and visiting art galleries and exhibitions, train and develop an ‘eye’ for art …and enjoy the relationship you can have with it that is free, just by looking. You can look at the world of art displayed in museums for nothing.

Your first piece doesn’t have to be expensive and can be purchased from so many different sources – galleries, markets, directly from the artist, art consultancies or may even be a loan!  Remember the old adage, art is in the eye of the beholder. As one collector said ‘if people say, ‘I don’t like it’, that’s okay. I never bought pieces hoping someone else would like it’.

What are you waiting for? – enjoy an afternoon at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest, participate in the public forum, get to know why others collect and take-in art that costs you nothing! Discover Hahan’s sculptures, Trinity that tell the story behind the complex interactions of the Indonesian art market through three central figures: the curator, the artist and the collector – see if you can pick who is who.
