EPA confirms Wentworth Falls Lake meets recreational water quality guidelines for PFAS

Council was today informed that water quality testing undertaken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at Wentworth Falls Lake found that the lake meets recreational water quality guidelines for PFAS, however levels of PFAS chemicals in fish at the lake were slightly elevated.

The testing was conducted as part of ambient – or background – testing being conducted by the EPA across NSW.

The test result confirms previous testing undertaken by Council in November 2024 which found that PFAS chemicals were well below recommended guidelines for recreational water quality, as outlined by the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Council understands that although slightly elevated levels of PFAS chemicals were found in fish at the lake, the EPA has not called for a ban on fishing or swimming.

The EPA has said as a precaution, the consumption of Redfin Perch should be limited to no more than one serve per week, and for other fish species to two serves per week, to minimise any potential exposure to PFAS.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said, “Council has welcomed the testing and is committed to full transparency and engagement with the local community on this matter.

“Council takes this matter very seriously and advocate strongly for our community on this issue.

“While it is reassuring to know that the water quality of the lake meets guidelines for PFAS, PFAS contamination in our water remains a serious issue for Blue Mountains residents.

“Council will be cooperating at every step of the way with State agencies as they conduct testing on recreational waterways in the Blue Mountains for PFAS chemicals.

“We will be monitoring this matter very closely. If contamination is found, we will be demanding investigation into potential sources, along with action on remediation.

“We are committed to absolute transparency and engagement with the community and if PFAS contamination is found in our recreational water, we will encourage the immediate sharing of information to help residents understand any potential impacts to the environment and health.”
