Entries are open for the Blue Mountains Binfluencer Awards
Are you recycling royalty? Do you know a zero-waste superhero?

The Blue Mountains Binfluencer Awards, which open Monday 12 February, celebrate members of the community who are working towards zero waste and influencing others to minimise the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “We are lucky in the Blue Mountains to have so many in our community who are committed to reducing waste and who already adhere to the values of Avoid, Reuse and Recycle. I have no doubt that the quality of the entries will be high.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing what we can learn from the winners and what tips they have that we can all use in our own homes to minimise waste going into landfill.”

“Most of us know a ‘Binfluencer’ or two and these awards are a fun way to recognise and reward them, while addressing the serious topic of the unnecessary waste currently going into landfills.”

Blue Mountains City Council CEO Rosemary Dillion said: “The circular economy reduces waste by sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended and we can minimise the amount of waste in landfills.

“A healthy environment, economy and community depends on everyone doing their part and these awards will celebrate the children, individuals, groups and businesses who are setting an example in their local community.”

The Binfluencer Awards project delivers one of Council’s actions in the Towards Zero Waste Strategy, to recognise those in the community whose actions are contributing towards a circular economy.

Award categories include:

Avoid:unnecessary consumption, disposable goods or single-use materials.

Reuse:items, whether for its original purpose or to fulfil a different function.

Recycle:material by breaking it down and repurposing it into something else.

Prizes for each over 18 category includes a $150 voucher for either Good and Fugly or Biome online stores (winner’s choice).

For the under 18 category, prizes include a $75 voucher for either The Turning Page bookshop in Springwood or Megalong Books in Leura (winner’s choice).

There is also a grand prize of an Apple iPad.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 6 April at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub.

Entries close on 22 March. Visit here for more information and to submit your entry.
