Election Commitment Funding for Knapsack Oval Upgrade Delivered
Minister for Youth and Sport, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck, said Blue Mountains City Council will receive $1.3 million in 2020 to upgrade the popular sporting and recreational hub.
“Local sports clubs are at the heart of the Blue Mountains community and I know this project will benefit the community now and into the future,” Minister Colbeck said.
Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the announcement was great news for the Lower Blue Mountains.
“I am delighted that this funding agreement has been made following a community-led campaign to revamp Knapsack Oval,” Senator Payne said.
“This upgrade will mean better sporting facilities for our community and will improve safety at the Oval carpark, which is often congested and unsafe.”
Senator Payne said Labor’s petty politics had been exposed by the successful delivery of the funding.
“From the day this election commitment was made, Labor have sought to mislead the community about our Government’s iron-clad commitment to get this project under way,” Senator Payne said.
“In September of last year, the Member for Macquarie made the totally false suggestion that funding for this project might not be released until 2026.
“The grant agreement is the proof: the funding will be provided in its entirety in 2020.
“This now paves the way for Blue Mountains City Council to wrap up the design phase and move forward with this.”
David Smith, President of the Blue Mountains Football Club welcomed the milestone announcement.
“We are very happy this project has been able to proceed, and be fast-tracked, through the generous support of the federal government and the advocacy of Senator Payne - it’s a great outcome for our members and the broader Mountains community,” Mr Smith said.
“Since this funding was announced, I never doubted that it would be delivered.”
Blue Mountains City Council, the project proponent, will be required to complete the Knapsack Oval upgrade by 30 June 2021.
