Sixty five of Lithgow’s young people attended the Future Finders Education Taster day on Tuesday 31 July where they sampled a range of educational offerings provided by the University of Notre Dame, Western Sydney University and TAFE NSW.

Participants got to taste what it would be like to be a medical, nursing, physics or hospitality student through lectures and hands on practicals. The Education Taster was held as part of the Future Finders program that Council has developed and delivered throughout 2018 after successfully obtaining a Youth Opportunities grant from the Department of Families and Communities.

“The aim of the Future Finders program is to encourage and inspire young people to take up education, training or employment in Lithgow. The day provided great insight into local opportunities that could be pursued in the future,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Cr Stephen Lesslie.

Highlights from the day included tours of all facilities as well as the University of Notre Dame’s simulation lab, where students got to meet Simon a very compliant  ‘patient’ that can simulate the response of a real patient; WSU’s physics lightning energy experiment and nursing’s vital signs demonstration; as well as TAFE’s hospitality practical. “This was a fantastic day that really showcased local opportunities and future career pathways,” said Rebecca Hamment, Careers Advisor from Lithgow High School.

To date, 122 young people have participated in a Future Finders entrepreneur, leadership or business workshop and 65 young people have participated in a taster session. In upcoming months there will be employment tasters, leadership challenges, social enterprise workshops and a youth leadership forum.
