Council Urges Community to Keep Recycling

Blue Mountains City Council is urging residents to keep recycling in light of recent media coverage of Ipswich Council abandoning its recycling service and changes to Australia’s recycling export market.

Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said, “There is no doubt that recent media coverage would give rise to community concern about the recycling service in the Blue Mountains.”

“Importantly, there is no change to Council’s recycling service,” he said.

“I urge residents to keep recycling correctly because our household recycling service is unchanged.”

The Mayor said that Council’s recycling contract stipulates that kerbside recycling materials must not be sent to landfill and that NSW has a very different regulatory environment to Queensland and other states.

“I encourage residents not to lose faith in our local recycling service based on the media stories about other councils in other states,” said the Mayor.

Blue Mountains residents are excellent recyclers compared to other areas in Sydney and NSW.

“We have a very low contamination rate in our household recycling which is great,” the Mayor said. “Ipswich has 50% contamination – that’s a very different situation to us at less than 10%. This reflects the value the Blue Mountains community places on its world Heritage environment.”

The loss of China as a recycling export market is impacting the Australian recycling industry. China’s National Sword Policy, which enforces restrictions on the importation of recycled materials, has impacted the global market for recyclable material.

The Mayor said Council is participating in discussions with the NSW Government and industry about the impacts of these changes on NSW councils and the way forward for local recycling arrangements.

“We will keep the community informed should there be any changes to our recycling service in the future as a result of these discussions,” he said.
