Blue Mountains City Council is undertaking geotechnical investigation work on Mount Wilson Road, after the road sustained damage during the April 2024 severe weather event.

This work is important to ensure the safety of the road and people using it.

Council had been monitoring the road prior to the rain event and recent inspections revealed further deterioration of the roadway has taken place, requiring immediate action.

Council has installed a light tower and hazard warning signs at the site.

Further geotechnical investigations will be taking place fromTuesday, 3 December to Friday, 13 December, subject to weather conditions.

Council has informed residents and landowners that the works will involve partial road closures during the day for four days, and full closures over five nights.

One lane of Mount Wilson Road will close to allow traffic contra-flow from 7am to 5pm on 3 to 6 December, while works that necessitate full closure of the road will take place from 8pm to 5am on 8 to 12 December.

Council has met with police, ambulance and NSW RFS representatives to ensure emergency services can continue to respond to any incident in the Mount Wilson or Mount Irvine area during the road closure.

Signs have been placed at the intersection of Mount Wilson Road and Bells Line of Road, and at Mount Wilson Road and Wyndham Avenue, alerting motorists to the works.

The April 2024 severe weather event caused significant damage to infrastructure across the Blue Mountains Local Government Area, including the collapse of Megalong Road in the Megalong Valley and landslips at Lapstone Tunnel in the Lower Mountains.

Council is continuing to work with State and Federal Governments to secure funding to rebuild.
