Blue Mountains City Council has committed to supporting the continuation of the Winter Magic Festival as one of the City’s key community events from 2019, pledging up to $80,000.

At the Ordinary Meeting on 27 March the Council endorsed a resolution to contribute up to $80,000 to allow Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise (BMEE) to work with the Winter Magic Festival Association and committee to help them re-establish the event in 2019.

This could include establishing a new management structure, in consultation with key stakeholders, and a full suite of management plans.

The Winter Magic Committee cancelled the 2018 event, due in part to difficulties meeting the compliance needs and associated costs required by an event of such a size.

Council also resolved, at the Ordinary Meeting, to contribute up to $20,000 to a Winter Market Day expected to be held in Katoomba Town Centre on 23 June, in lieu of the 2018 festival.

“Council acknowledges the commitment and contribution of current and past Winter Magic Committee members and volunteers,” Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said.

“We recognise that without their dedication, Winter Magic would not have grown to become the largest event in the Blue Mountains and one of the largest community events in NSW.

“Council is committed to the Winter Magic Festival being a community-led event.”

The Winter Magic Festival’s contribution to the City, both economically and socially, is significant. Visitors generate $2.4 million from the event. Non visitors contribute an astounding $1.8 million, which represents 75% of the total revenue.

“Council is pleased to provide financial assistance to ensure this festival continues into the future,” Cr Greenhill said.
