Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill and Deputy Mayor, Cr Chris Van der Kley urge the Blue Mountains community to share the responsibility to improve road safety during National Road Safety Week.
Blue Mountains City Council is proud to continue its commitment to road safety by once again supporting National Road Safety Week and is asking the community to do the same.

National Road Safety Week (6-12 May 2019) highlights the need for road users to share responsibility on the road, slow down and Drive So Others Survive (#DriveSOS).

In 2018, 1145 people were killed on Australian roads. 354 of those were killed on NSW roads alone.

Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill said: "The Blue Mountains community can help protect the vulnerable on our roads by always following the road rules, removing distractions and slowing down.

"Residents should leave enough space for others and move over for anyone who is working in and around the road such as emergency services, road workers and roadside assistance vehicles."

National Road Safety Week is an initiative of SARAH (Safer Australian Roads and Highways) by President, Peter Frazer, who tragically lost his daughter Sarah in a road crash in 2012.

In addition to driving safely, residents can show their support by displaying a yellow ribbon on their vehicle and/or wearing a yellow lapel ribbon during the week.

As an advocate, you will demonstrate that you actively protect all road users and stand in solidarity with those who have been injured or killed in road crashes.

Yellow ribbons and other Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week items are available by donation at Council's customer service counter in Katoomba and Springwood, and online. Or you can further support the cause by taking the Pledge.

Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Inc. is a not-for-profit association. Their mission is to promote initiatives that bring about improved road safety, as well as support those affected by road tragedy.
