Council releases detailed designs for Hawkesbury Road pathway

The new pathway is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2026 and will deliver a continuous off-road connection between White Cross Road, Winmalee and Hawkesbury Lookout, Hawkesbury Heights.
The project aims to enhance safety and access and once completed, will connect with existing pathways to provide a continuous link for walkers travelling between Springwood town centre, Winmalee town centre and Hawkesbury Lookout.
A consultation campaign was carried out for the project in January and February 2025 and invited interested community members to provide feedback on the preliminary concept plans for the pathway.
Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill said: “Council is building new active transport infrastructure for the benefit of everyone in our community, providing options for people to get around and stay healthy, and for communities to come together.
“The release of detailed designs for this pathway is a major milestone for the project.
"The active transport links program means that more people, including children and the elderly can enjoy our streets together.”
The Hawkesbury Road pathway is part of the Blue Mountains Active Transport Links Program, which aims to improve our streets with safe and sustainable links between key destinations and towns across the Blue Mountains.
The program identifies priority projects across the Blue Mountains and aims to deliver more than 30km of new active transport infrastructure for the city.
This pathway is proudly funded by the Australian Government through the Active Transport Fund and Investing in Our Communities Program, with additional support from the NSW Government.
Council will be holding an information stall at Winmalee Village Shopping Centre at 3pm-7pm, Thursday 4 September to discuss the project with the community.
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman MP said, “I am so pleased to see Council progress this next stage of the project. I share the view of one of the respondents in the consultation: ‘Can’t wait for the pathway from Hawkesbury Heights’
“This is now in the final stage of consultation, so especially if you’re a resident of Hawkesbury Heights or Winmalee and you haven’t had a chance to get involved, now is the time to do it.”
Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle MP said, “I want our community to be able to feel safe when they are walking in the region, and to feel connected to the rest of the community.
“This pathway will bring so many positive benefits to the Hawkesbury Heights and Winmalee community.”
