Council pays tribute to long-term volunteers at Megalong Valley Community Hall
We’re extending a special thank you to two of our longest serving volunteers – Norma Carlon and Christine Bundy of the Megalong Valley. Norma has been volunteering at the Megalong Valley’s Community Hall for around fifty years and Christine for more than thirty years.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “We are deeply grateful to all our generous volunteers, none more so than those who continually give freely of their time for extended periods.
“Megalong Valley Community Hall is an important Council community facility and relies on volunteers to manage its day-to-day running and connect people. Norma Carlon and Christine Bundy are two outstanding volunteers who have given selflessly over their lives.
“On behalf of Council and the community, I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude for all you have done for the Megalong Valley community by helping to run this valuable venue since it was taken over by Council more than fifty years ago.”
Norma’s daughter-in-law Karen Carlon, who is now President and Secretary of the Megalong Valley Hall committee, said that the beloved location has been at the heart of the community for as long as she can remember:
“It’s seen many gatherings over the years – weddings, significant birthdays, community Christmas parties, gymkhanas, trivia nights, even a wake,” she said. “It’s played such an important role in bringing this closely knit community together.
“Christina and Norma have always gone above and beyond to keep the hall operating. People don’t always realise the work that goes on behind the scenes – organising bookings, regular meetings, taking minutes, reporting issues and arranging maintenance – but they did it year after year.”
Norma, who has lived in the Megalong Valley for most of her 95 years, was the Hall’s secretary since Council took over in the 1970s and has been on the committee since the 1960s. The Hall was the original agricultural bureau and was built by the Megalong Progress and Sporting Association.
Christine Bundy was also born in the Valley and lived there most of her life, taking on the popular Tea Rooms after her mother established them. She managed bookings at the Hall for over 30 years and oversaw its operations for Council.
Council thanks the current Megalong Valley Community Hall committee volunteers too. They are plannng a ‘thank you’ day for Norma and Christine on 25 October at the Megalong Valley Showgrounds, including a community cricket match.
Council has a total of thirteen public halls and centres available for hire throughout the Blue Mountains for events. We acknowledge and thank each of the volunteers who assist in the smooth running of these venues, as well at Council’s cultural facilities, and more generally all volunteers in the Blue Mountains region.
