Council accelerates annual road repair program

Heavy patching during the 2024-2025 program.
Blue Mountains City Council’s road repair and renewal program is moving into its next phase with heavy patching works to repair up to 300 sites across the city in the coming months.

During heavy patching, there will be temporary lane closures, reduced speeds and short delays at repair sites.

On-street parking may also be restricted to enable crews to safely carry out the work and residents near each site will be notified in advance.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the heavy patching program is another important step in restoring the local road network after years of severe weather and natural disasters.

“We thank residents and road users for their patience while these works are carried out, and we urge everyone to please slow down around work sites and follow traffic control instructions,” Cr Greenhill said.?

The works are part of Council’s annual Asset Works Program and are partly funded by the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery grant program.

The program prioritises repairs that reduce risks to public safety, prevent further deterioration and failure, and maintain road function.

Blue Mountains City Council manages an extensive local road network of about 600 kilometres of sealed roads and 90 kilometres of unsealed roads.

Heavy patching is a more complex method than standard pothole repairs and involves cutting out badly damaged sections of road, strengthening or replacing the underlying road base and then resurfacing the area with new asphalt.

This method is used when the road pavement has failed or is at risk of failure and helps extend the life of the road and reduces the need for larger, more expensive re-construction works in the future.

Works valued at $19 million were completed in 2022-23, following multiple natural disasters and damage to almost one third of the City's roads. In 2023-24, Council carried out an additional $2.5 million in works, and in 2024-25, Council delivered $3.2 million in works and 38 kilometres of repairs.
