Child Care Relief Package Welcomed

Families in the Blue Mountains are in for fee relief under the Morrison Government’s plan to pay child care services that remain open and do not charge families for care.

Services will receive payments based on 50 per cent of their average fees, up to a maximum of the hourly rate cap, based on enrolments in the fortnight before 2 March. This will further protect child care jobs and ensure the viability of local services

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the new plan, combined with the $130 billion JobKeeper payment, would help keep child care doors open and employees in a job.

“Child care services will have to remain open and not charge families fees if they accept the Government’s payment,” Senator Payne said.

“This package underscores the Morrison Government’s strong commitment to help families  get on the bridge to recovery by providing yet more practical financial assistance during these unprecedented times.”

Vicki Skoulogenis, former president of Child Care NSW and director of All 4 Kindergarten, which runs services in Mulgoa and Glenbrook, said the announcement was a lifeline.

“We welcome with great relief the Government’s child care package. It will help keep our doors open and, when combined with the JobKeeper payment, keep our valued educators in their jobs,” Ms Skoulogenis said.

“In light of all the other complications around coronavirus, the parents I’ve been speaking to say the fee freeze is a real burden off their shoulders.”

The system will be reviewed after one month, with an extension to be considered after three months. The payments will be paid in lieu of the Child Care Subsidy and Additional Child Care Subsidy payments.
