Channel 7 Sunrise in Winmalee – Urging Community to be Bushfire Ready
Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman joined weatherman, James Tobin, for the broadcast from Emma Parade alongside fellow residents, NSW RFS, NSW Fire and Rescue and local Community Fire Unit members.
“On a weekend where we saw water bombing and firies on the ground, working to contain numerous fires across the Mountains, it was a timely reminder to make sure we all have a proper bushfire plan.
“Local residents, including some of our under 10 year olds with their rabbit and Chihuahua, highlighted the need to prepare homes and plan what to do with their pets,” she said.
Ms Templeman, who five years after the 2013 fires has only just rebuilt her home, reinforced the need for adequate insurance, after she and many neighbours found themselves significantly underinsured.
“Too many of us learnt the hard way,” she said. “We thought our home insurance would cover the cost of rebuilding but with changes to building regulations in fire-prone areas, many of us were left hundreds of thousands of dollars short.”
“In Emma Parade alone, too many people found it difficult financially to rebuild on their old block, thanks to unintentional under-insurance.
“Unfortunately, 5 years on, there is still a problem with the system.
“I’m certain many people are still not aware of the real costs of rebuilding, particularly if you find yourself in a Flame Zone or BAL 40 category where expensive additional building features are required, like additional layers to your roof and super tough windows,” she said.
