Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

Friday 3 December is International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD).

IDPWD is a global United Nations event that celebrates the achievements and contributions of people with disability, and how this enriches our community and culture.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: "International Day of People with Disability is about breaking down barriers and celebrating abilities of all kind."

"It also aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. The way we understand disability and ability is changing rapidly, for the better.

"The incredible experiences, fortitude, and creativity of people with disability is astounding. In a world that often tells them they can't, people with disability continue to shine and teach us all that the real limitations are the ones we create."

This year, we're celebrating IDPWD with a book launch for local author, Tish Peiris and her new book The Saddest Girl, and the community is invited to attend.

Tish was a former journalist from Sri Lanka when she had an accident that resulted in an acquired brain injury. The Saddest Girl tells the story of a girl called Daisy, who struggles with her mum's brain injury. It is a retelling of Tish's own story and experiences.

The book launch will be held on Monday 6 December from 10 - 11.30am, at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba. Places are limited and RSVPs are essential.

The event will be operating with a COVID-safe plan, and all current restrictions, including vaccination status, apply.
