History Week is an annual, state-wide celebration of history organised by the History Council of New South Wales. This year the theme is ‘Hands-on History’.

To celebrate, the ‘Blue Mountains Stories: A moment in time’ exhibition will be hosting a special exhibit interpreting this theme, shining a spotlight on our local history and museums. From 3 September, you can view a collection of local treasures at Katoomba Library.

We’re also holding a talk, ‘The Home Curator’, on Wednesday 7 September at 2pm, hosted by Council’s Museums Advisor, Gay Hendriksen. Gay will be speaking about how to look after your heirlooms at home and old family photos to a professional standard for future generations. The talk is already fully booked.

‘Blue Mountains Stories: A moment in time’ is an exciting joint initiative between Blue Mountains City Council and our local museums and historical societies with museum collections, which has been running since April 2021.

It gives participating museums an opportunity to provide the community with a glimpse of what they have on offer, using a small exhibition space at Katoomba Library.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “Largely run by volunteers, these museums are the custodians of our local heritage and play a crucial role in our community by providing opportunities for us to engage with our past.

“The History Week events are a culmination of the work Council’s Heritage team have done, to bring a snapshot of our rich and diverse local history to the community and is a lovely way to celebrate both History Week and the ‘Blue Mountains Stories: A moment in time’ exhibition.”

The current exhibition begins on 3 September at Katoomba Library, showcasing a collaborative display from Tarella Cottage at Wentworth Falls (Blue Mountains Historical Society) and the Friends of the Paragon. The exhibition is free and open to the whole community.
