Gum Leaves of Hope at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre
Join us for an extraordinary interactive exhibition at the Blue Mountains Culture Centre, as we celebrate 25 years of Sustainable Blue Mountains, and look forward to 25 years more.

This exhibition will showcase artwork and stories created by school children in the early 2000s, revealing what they looked forward to in the next 25 years, as well as historical Council documents from the same period.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “This is an extra special, thought-provoking exhibition – a time capsule display showing what we dreamed of 25 years ago, and what we achieved, and what we plan to achieve in another quarter of a century.

“The exhibition marks the significant milestone we celebrate this November – 25 years since we implemented theTowards a More Sustainable Blue Mountains: A 25-year Vision for the City and Map for Action 2000-2025.

“We consulted with the community then and encouraged residents to tell us about their hopes and aspirations for our City, establishing multiple engagement opportunities. Now we look back at what our children envisioned for 2025.”

As part of the exhibition, running from now until 23 November, the Cultural Centre team has installed a gum leaf display – ‘the Gum Leaves of Hope’ – a collaborative activity asking visitors to imagine their hopes for the future and write them on a gum leaf.

The children’s artworks and stories depict how they imagined life in the Blue Mountains in the year 2025, with the children’s writing competition revealing some of their concerns for the future they had 25 years ago.

Historical Council materials from 25 years ago include the Council’s Vision from the City and theMap for Action. These documents set a course of action to shape the City for the next 25 years in accordance with the community endorsed vision for the future.

“This opportunity for our local community to participate – both children and adults – allows us to hope and dream for the future,” Cr Greenhill said. “And it recognises how the future belongs to our children. Support this wonderful exhibition by taking part in this free, family-friendly event. Bring your grandparents or children. All are welcome.”

The 25 Years of Sustainable Blue Mountains exhibition is at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Katoomba until 23 November.  Details here
