Campaign to Make Springwood Pool Chlorine-Free
An ongoing tight burning sensation in my lungs after my regular swim at Springwood pool prompted me to research chlorine swimming pools. I wasn’t surprised to find enclosed indoor chlorinated pools are often not safe places to take the family. And certainly not good for our World Heritage environment.
When chlorine combines with human sweat, urine and body lotions it forms chloramines and other toxic by-products. Chloramines in the air affect children and adult swimmers, instructors, life guards, spectators and staff.
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics highly disciplined German swimming athletes refused to compete in a chlorinated pool until it was upgraded to Ozone.
Benefits of Ozone
Ozone provides natural and healthy pool sanitation based on oxygen - a much safer system for people and the environment.
- Health risks from chlorine in indoor pools eliminated
- No caustic gases or wheeze – causing endotoxins
- No sore, red eyes
- No itchy skin
- No lung and throat irritations
- Water that is soft to swim in
- A safer work environment for staff, instructors and lifeguards
- Environmentally responsible - fewer chemicals and less water consumption
- Reduced risks from chemical manufacture and transport
- Pool equipment, fixtures and fitting last longer
- Reduced maintenance costs
- Protection against chlorine resistant parasites
Thank you to BMCC
A big thank you to Blue Mountains City Council for sponsoring my application for a My Community Project grant of $150,000. If successful, the grant will pay for the upgrade of Springwood pool sanitation system from chlorine to natural and healthy Ozone. But we haven’t won the grant yet.
To win this grant we need your vote!!
To make this a reality the Blue Mountains community has to vote for this project as their preferred project. It will be competing with other (unknown at this stage) grant applications from the Blue Mountains. ‘Project Ozone’ needs every vote it can get. Voting starts mid-July.
Springwood pool will only move to Ozone if you and your friends give it your vote. Anyone 16 years or older and living in the Blue Mountains can vote.
Follow our Facebook page for updates about when and how to vote. To increase voting please share widely.
Once we have Springwood pool upgraded to Ozone we will start the campaign for Katoomba indoor pool to be upgraded also.
