NSW Minister for Mental Health, Tanya Davies, and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, officially opened the Nepean Hospital triage and assessment centre (TAC) in May 2017.
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the announcement that new frontline staff to make mental health care more accessible and culturally inclusive for Aboriginal people will be recruited in the Nepean Blue Mountains region, thanks to almost $140,000 from the NSW Government.

Stuart Ayres said the new funding will improve workforce training and development, mental health service planning and clinical care for Aboriginal people in the Nepean Blue Mountains community.

“Aboriginal staff help make services more accessible and culturally safe for Aboriginal people who experience mental illness,” Stuart Ayres said.

“This expansion will see new Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical Leaders improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people right here at Nepean Hospital.”

Minister for Mental Health Tanya Davies said the boost for the Nepean is part of a $1 million investment to expand the Aboriginal Mental Health workforce across NSW.

“The Aboriginal mental health workforce is an essential part of our mental health services. It is vital this workforce is well supported to continue to close the gap and improve health outcomes for our Aboriginal community,” Mrs Davies said.

“The Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical Leaders will support practitioners to better coordinate care planning for Aboriginal people with complex mental health issues, with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes.”

Today’s investment boosts existing mental health programs for Aboriginal people.

Earlier this year $680,000 was announced in Western Sydney for the successful Got It! Program to provide early intervention for Aboriginal students aged five to eight years, as well as support for their parents and carers, and $800,000 was recently awarded to Coomealla Health’s suicide prevention project in the State’s far west.

An estimated 115 Aboriginal people work with the NSW Government as mental health trainees, clinicians or clinical leaders to provide mental health services.
