Boomerang Bags 1st Birthday Celebration

The Lithgow Boomerang Bags group, which has in its first year distributed over 1,000 bags to the local community through local shops and various community events, is returning to Lithgow Library for its 1st birthday celebration.

Boomerang Bags was started in 2013 in Burleigh Heads by two women who were tired of seeing the plastic waste caused by single use shopping bags, so they decided  to sew recycled bags out of donated fabric to give away free throughout their community.

Lithgow Boomerang Bags first held an open day at Lithgow Library in 2018 and are now returning to the library on Friday 21 June from 10.30am to 2.30pm to celebrate their first birthday with another sew-in and morning tea. The group is looking for more volunteers and you don’t need to be able to sew, because there are other jobs to do like cutting and pinning, but you can learn to use the sewing machine and overlocker if you want.

Mayor Ray Thompson said, “Volunteer groups make a big impact on our community, and there is great enjoyment in being part of these groups. Boomerang Bags are also working to save the environment one bag at a time.”

For Ironfest 2019, the theme was “Once Upon a Time”. Boomerang Bags made special bags with pockets that said “Once upon a time…there were no plastic bags!”  These were a hit at Ironfest so they have made more that will be given away at the Lithgow Library at the 1st Birthday Celebration on Friday June 21st, from 10.30am to 2.30pm. So be sure to drop in for a cuppa and to get a free Boomerang Bag.
