Blue Mountains Veteran Competing this Sunday in Invictus Games
Mr McGrath spent nearly 20 years in the Army, in Special Operations Command, before being medically discharged following serious injuries sustained during his 2nd tour of Afghanistan.
Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman met with Mr McGrath, who said his family, friends and the local community had played a significant role in helping him with his ongoing recovery and pursuing new interests, after his career came to an abrupt end.
Sailing became Mr McGrath’s new focus after he was injured, leading to him competing in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 2014. Almost five years on, he is representing Australia on the international stage.
“It was an honour and pleasure to meet Craig and hear about his journey having been injured in the line of duty, losing the career he loved, and now finding new focus and interests beyond the military.
“Veterans transitioning into civilian society face many challenges and it is vital that Government and the community at large recognise the sacrifices they and their families have made in the service of our country.
“Craig pointed out that people often think of our veterans as predominantly older men, when in fact many are men and women in their early twenties, some who have completed several tours of war zones.
“They can face great difficulties emotionally and physically after being medically discharged – especially if they have no Plan B because they thought the military was going to be their life long career,” she said.
“Craig hopes the Invictus Games will provide the community with a different perspective of what a veteran is.
“The Invictus Games is an international event being held in our backyard and is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to show our support and broaden our understanding of the veteran community.
“I encourage everyone to get behind Craig and the Australian team. The sailing is a free event on the harbour, so a fantastic day out for the whole family.”
