Blue Mountains City Council has successfully secured millions of dollars in funding for new projects that will enhance the liveability of the Blue Mountains Local Government Area as one of eight councils signing a Western Sydney City Deal on Sunday.

Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said, “Importantly the Western Sydney City Deal recognises the Council’s ongoing opposition to Western Sydney Airport.

“Even though none of our nominated projects for City Deal funding are connected to any airport proposal and nor do they enable it, it is important that the City Deal acknowledges that we have a policy position opposing the Western Sydney Airport at Badgery’s Creek and that this position is different to the Federal and State governments and many councils,” said the Mayor.

The City Deal covers eight western Sydney councils – Blue Mountains, Wollondilly, Penrith, Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown, and Camden - and includes a commitment to:

  • Establish a $150 million Liveability Fund, shared among the eight participating Councils;
  • Targeted initiatives to create jobs and develop skills across the region; and
  • Joint Federal-State funding of the first stage of a North-South rail link;

“We know that the second airport is not in the best interests of the Western Sydney community,” said the Mayor. “As we look to the future of the Western Sydney region, I wanted future generations to know that Blue Mountains City Council stood up for its principles and for its community, and that the City Deal document reflected this.

“This was a key outcome, because it means we have secured millions of dollars in funds for our city and our community while our individual position is recognised by other levels of government.”

“Our campaign to stop this airport continues."

The part of the Sydney metropolitan basin covered by the eight councils has come to be known as the Third City or the Western Parkland City in addition to the first city of Sydney (Eastern Harbour City) and the second city of Parramatta (Central River City).

“As a City within a World Heritage National Park, attracting 4 million visitors a year, we are important to the Western Parkland City and we have a lot to contribute to the Western Sydney region."

"The City Deal offers a unique opportunity for our City as we work to build a successful future for the Blue Mountains by fostering the social, economic and environmental aspirations of our community to support a vibrant, sustainable and resilient City."
