Blue Mountains libraries make it easy for all to get library cards and access to library services
Blue Mountains libraries offer an Unconfirmed Address membership which allows those who are unable to provide proof of address a library membership.
The membership gives access to four physical items and unlimited access to the library’s online and eResources, including library computers, printers and WiFi.
This membership type works for many people under varied conditions, for example people experiencing homelessness, lack of current documentation, people in transition, or teens in foster care.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the initiative was an important step to increasing access to library items and services for homeless people, and others in difficult circumstances.
“In an ideal world, everybody would be able to prove an address. We see this as a stepping stone to full library membership. We hope people using this membership will have access to more resources to help transition or change your current circumstances,” Cr Greenhill said.
“You can only imagine that if you’re homeless, you’re not going to have computer access. This membership allows people in our community, who are experiencing difficult circumstances to use the library with dignity and keep in touch with family.
“Libraries and many Council services are the main points of access for people living on the streets. Libraries are places people can get out of the rain, use the bathroom, and stay warm. Mostly, it’s a safe, welcoming, inclusive place.”
To join as an Unconfirmed Address member, you need to have identification with you with proof of your name. Acceptable forms of identification include Medicare, Centrelink, bank, or concession cards to confirm your name.
This type of membership allows you to borrow four items for four weeks from any Blue Mountains Library branch, with one renewal.
