Blue Mountains Historical Society - Meeting and Public Talk "The Battle of Hamel"

With Armistice Day fast approaching, a talk on The Battle of Hamel will be presented by retired Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Peter Sweeney.

Lt Colonel Peter Sweeney (Retired) is a local military historian, retired infantry lieutenant colonel and battlefield guide.  He recently completed a Master of Military History degree through the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of NSW.

The Battle of Hamel (4 July 1918) was planned and commanded by Lieutenant General John Monash.  It was a highly successful attack against German positions by the Australian Army and US Army infantry with support from British tanks and was the first ‘combined arms’ battle in military history.

The many innovations introduced by Lt-Gen Monash included close co-operation between infantry and tanks, the use of aeroplanes for reconnaissance, reporting, re-supply, covering the noise of the tanks, and the use of tanks to accompany the infantry.

Mr Sweeney is a Director of Battle Honours Australia and, in concert with Battle Honours UK, conducts walking tours of Australian battlefields at Gallipoli, on the Western Front and in the Pacific region.

He will be escorting a group from Australia to Gallipoli in May 2019 and further information is available via email to enquiries@battle-honours.com.au.

Come along and learn more about one of Monash’s major battles.
