On Saturday 2 February 2019, commencing at 10.30 am, the Blue Mountains Historical Society will conduct the first of its regular monthly meetings and public talks for 2019 at the History Centre at 99 Blaxland Road, Wentworth Falls.

Dr Ian Jack will present a talk on 19th Century Country Retreats in Faulconbridge.

Dr Ian Jack was associate professor of history at the University of Sydney, serving two terms as dean of the faculty. He is a senior fellow and college archivist at St. Andrew’s College, Sydney University. He is a Past President of the Royal Australian Historical Society and the founding president of the Australian Society for History of Engineering and Technology (ASHET) on its formation in 2003, serving in that position until 2012.

A prolific writer, Dr Jack has written on subjects as varied as St Matthews Church Windsor and Historical Sites in the Lithgow area. He has been active in researching the industrial heritage of places like the Paragon Restaurant.

Faulconbridge is inevitably connected with Sir Henry Parkes but Sir James Martin, another premier of New South Wales, Sir Alfred Stephen, former Chief Justice and Charles Badham, Professor of Classics and Logic at the University of Sydney also lived there during the nineteenth century as did Francis Foy (brother of the better-known Mark) and Norman Lindsay in the twentieth.

Professor Jack will reveal the story of some of these figures in his talk on Saturday 2 February. Come along and meet some of the folk who helped shape our history.

Morning tea will be available from 10am. The meeting and talk, free for members, $5.00 for non-members, will commence at 10.30am.
