The BMGS F1 in Schools team – Thrust Vector – has won the National Final of the 2019 F1 in Schools competition.

The Finals were held in Melbourne, from 11th to 15th March.

Described as “the largest and most successful school-based STEM program in the world”, the F1 in Schools competition “challenges and inspires students to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, graphics, marketing, leadership and teamwork, media skills and financial strategy.”

In addition to the racing component and delivering engineering presentations for both computer-aided design and manufacturing processes, the students conduct marketing interviews at their pit booths and give verbal presentations for their team vision and enterprise.

Year 10 Design & Technology students Zac Burgess, Matthew Foster, Fin Hastie, Nicholas Hayes and Mirah Larkin formed their team – Thrust Vector – and developed two F1 model cars in 2018, successfully winning through regional and State finals to earn their place in the National finals.

In addition to their overall 1st placing, the team won Best Verbal Presentation, the Innovation Award, Best Engineered CAD, Best Manufactured Car, and Best Engineered Car.

With this win, the team has qualified to represent Australia in the international competition, to be held in Abu Dhabi.

This is the fourth time in four years that a BMGS team has qualified for the State Finals of this prestigious competition; and follows the excellent 3rd placing achieved in last year’s National competition, held in Tasmania, by BMGS team Clutch Control.

Our team's co-ordinator was Technology teacher, Mr. Michael Laws, who teaches STEM classes for students in Years 1 to 12.

This competition for Design & Technology students, together with co-curricular activities such as Robotics, Coding and Programming endorse Blue Mountains Grammar School’s focus on delivering quality Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) related subjects in an exciting and innovative way.

The team is looking for sponsors and donations to get them to Abu Dhabi - for more information, please visit the Thrust Vector Racing website.
