A Blue Mountains Family Day Care service is one of only four national finalists in the Family Day Care Australia Excellence Awards.

Mark and Michelle Tregillgas of Moochy Kids Family Day Care won the Educator of the Year Blue Mountains and Central West regional award last month, and on Monday 14 October, they were announced as the NSW finalist.

“I was flabbergasted,” said Michelle Tregillgas. “I’ve seen so many of the profiles of other nominees on social media and there are all these amazing people. I can’t believe we won the State.”

“It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” said Mark Tregillgas.

Mark and Michelle Tregillgas are a husband and wife team who run a Family Day Care service from their Winmalee home.

They were nominated by a total of 12 of their families who made comments such as: “[They} go above and beyond to ensure every child gets to experience the wonders of nature in our wonderful Blue Mountains, as well as learning about different cultures and learning to be thoughtful, kind and caring little individuals.”

The emphasis on outdoor play is one of the key features of Moochy Kids, with Mark and Michelle taking the children on regular excursions, including to their two vegetable plots at their local community gardens where the children help with the planting, watering and harvesting, learning as they go.

They tailor activities according to the children’s interest and topicality, such as when earlier this year, the children enjoyed a space theme for an entire week, even watching as the international space station flew over the Blue Mountains.

The Moochy Kids get involved with many charitable activities throughout the year, including raising funds for their local community food drive, donations of water for drought-affected towns and Heart Kids instead of Valentine’s Day.

Blue Mountains Family Day Care Service Supervisor, Bev Foden, said: “This award is well-deserved acknowledgement of the outstanding Family Day Care service that Mark and Michelle provide.

“It recognises the value placed on regularly taking children on bush outings and of connecting them to their local community. The children in Michelle and Mark’s service really have a sense of belonging.”

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “It is wonderful to see such caring, community-mind individuals being recognised nationally.

“It’s also heartening to see this fantastic Council-run service continuing to provide quality, home-based childcare to our young families.”

Mark and Michelle will be attending a gala dinner on 23 November in Hobart where the national winner will be announced.
