Blue Mountains Edible Garden Festival and Trail

Over 30 gardeners gathered at Wentworth Falls on Saturday to prepare for the FIRST Blue Mountains Edible Garden Festival and Trail to be held over the 3rd and 4th March 2018.

Visitors to the trail will be able to talk to the gardeners about their methods.  Methods such as the use of companion plants to reduce pests, mulches to protect the soil, compost to bring the soil to life, seed saving to maintain food security and so many more techniques.

As well, there will be a number of workshops to help people along the way to creating their own edible paradise.

Food growers are passionate about healthy soil and sustainability.  They proudly dig into their compost heaps to reveal hard working worms creating exquisite fertilizer.

Edible gardens can provide beauty, healthy food, delight for the family and produce to share.   Food growers are saving money, reducing food miles and contributing to a more sustainable planet.

“When people grow edibles, they are far more cautious about using poisons to kill weeds and pests.  Sadly, many widely used poisons kill not only the pests, but frogs, bees, good bugs and all manner of vital nutrients in the soil.  Similarly, the use of artificial fertilizers has been shown to reduce soil fertility over time.”

My generation grew up with gardens filled with fruit trees and vegetables.   We reveled in watching our bean seeds emerge and later eating fresh from the vine.

Now, people are wanting their children to experience the benefits of that kind of lifestyle.

“I believe this trail is a world first,” said Susanne Rix who initiated the event.  “There are garden trails, and art trails and food safaris, but I could find no edible garden trails.

Eventually, I’d like to see every community presenting their own Edible Garden Trail.  Opening gardens to potential new neighbours and sharing their passion.  Not just in Australia, but around the world.

The event is sponsored by Bendigo Bank and auspiced by Slow Food Blue Mountains.

Tickets available on line or various venues throughout the mountains.
