This prestigious annual award event is celebrated by museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural organisations from across NSW, and recognises the exceptional achievements of cultural institutions and individuals.

sensorial was a fully immersive exhibition designed for and by neurodivergent and creatives with a disability, and curated by the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre’s Artistic Program Leader Rilka Oakley.

The exhibition encouraged visitors to engage multiple senses beyond sight through touch and play.

With soft furnishings to reduce noise, accessible signage, and trained volunteers, the exhibition aimed to create an inclusive experience.

A neurodivergent writer contributed to the catalogue, offering an experiential reflection, while visitors were empowered to nurture their sensory needs.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, said: “As the inaugural City of the Arts, we value the contribution artists and creators make to the quality of life in the Blue Mountains.

“It enriches life in our local community, as well as the local experience for our visitors.

“The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre worked closely with the neurodivergent community to create this exhibition as an inclusive space that could be enjoyed by everyone, and I am extremely pleased to see this work has been recognised with this award.

“In 2022, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre welcomed its 1 millionth visitor. So as more than 1 million people can confirm, it’s a wonderful asset to our community.

The development of sensorial was supported by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation, Museums and Galleries of NSW, and developed entirely in the Blue Mountains.

Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba is Council’s leading creative facility, and comprises the City Gallery, World Heritage Exhibition, retail shop, cafe, and creative meeting and workshop spaces.
